HumanX 2026: 'Claude Code Has Become a Religion' — The AI Industry Just Shifted

6,500 attendees at HumanX 2026 witnessed a power shift: OpenAI no longer dominates the AI conversation. Claude Code surpassed $2.5B ARR and Anthropic became the industry's center of gravity.

The most repeated word at a 6,500-person AI conference wasn't "GPT." It was "Claude."

Last week's HumanX 2026 at San Francisco's Moscone Center was supposed to be a broad discussion about agentic AI. Instead, it turned into something closer to a coronation.

Arvind Jain, CEO of enterprise AI company Glean, captured the vibe perfectly: "Claude Code has become a religion." That line wasn't a joke. It was CNBC's headline.

How ChatGPT lost the room

From 2023 through early 2025, every AI conversation orbited OpenAI. "What GPT can do" was synonymous with "what AI can do." Conference booths advertised GPT-4 compatibility. Startups bragged about their OpenAI API integration.

Then Anthropic launched Claude Code to the general public in May 2025, and the narrative started shifting. GitHub Copilot invented the coding assistant category, but Claude Code redefined it: an agent that lives in your terminal, writes code, runs tests, and commits to git autonomously.

By February 2026, Claude Code's annualized revenue had crossed $2.5 billion. Anthropic's valuation sits at $380 billion. It's now one of the most valuable private companies on the planet.

What actually happened at HumanX

The conference theme was agentic AI, the evolution from chatbots that answer questions to systems that take action independently. And Claude was the poster child.

According to TechCrunch, most attendees named Claude Code as the best coding tool available today. They acknowledged strong alternatives from OpenAI, Cursor, and Google, but agreed that Claude Code fundamentally changed how developers work.

The interesting part is that this isn't just vibes. It's backed by money. Fortune 500 companies announced production agentic AI deployments across manufacturing, logistics, and finance, with Anthropic's technology at the core.

OpenAI's counter-move: ChatGPT Pro at $100/month

OpenAI didn't sit idle. During HumanX week, it announced a ChatGPT Pro tier at $100/month with significantly expanded Codex access. The intent was obvious: peel developers away from Claude Code.

The conference response was lukewarm. The consensus was that it's not a price problem but an experience problem. The workflow Claude Code created, writing code in natural language from the terminal, testing, and committing, isn't something you counter with a subscription discount.

The bigger picture: a generational shift in AI

What HumanX 2026 revealed is a generational transition. The 2023-2024 era was about who builds the smartest model. The 2025-2026 era is about who builds the most useful tool. Claude Code is the inflection point.

Gartner predicts 40% of enterprise applications will feature task-specific AI agents by the end of 2026, up from less than 5% in 2025. An 8x increase. Anthropic caught that wave. OpenAI, at least at this conference, hadn't.

This could be temporary. OpenAI still has a larger user base and broader product lineup. GPT-5.5 (codenamed Spud) is rumored to be imminent. But right now, the developer community's center of gravity has moved to Claude.

What this means for you

If you're a developer, the expanding competition in AI coding tools is unambiguously good news. More competition means lower prices and higher quality.

But the deeper signal from HumanX is about agentic AI as a paradigm. Claude Code demonstrated that AI can move from "ask and answer" to "instruct and execute." If that direction holds, the developer's role shifts from "person who writes code" to "person who orchestrates AI agents."

HumanX 2026 confirmed that transition is already underway. In front of 6,500 witnesses.
