The Context – From Search to Conversation
The history of online shopping is the history of search. In the 2000s, you found products through Google. In the 2010s, Amazon's search bar became the default starting point. Now, in the late 2020s, people are increasingly asking AI chatbots instead.
OpenAI saw this opportunity early. In 2025, they tried "Instant Checkout," letting users complete purchases directly inside ChatGPT. According to CNBC, the feature struggled, and OpenAI pivoted to connecting users to Shopify's existing checkout infrastructure instead.

How It Works
Shopify syncs product data (titles, descriptions, prices, images, variants, availability) to a global catalog in real time. When a ChatGPT user asks for running shoes under $150, ChatGPT pulls matching products from this catalog and presents them in the chat.
Critically, purchases complete on the merchant's own storefront, not inside ChatGPT. Merchants retain ownership of customer relationships and data.
The Agentic Plan also lets brands that do not use Shopify for e-commerce add products to the Shopify Catalog, gaining access to the same AI distribution channels.
The Bigger Picture
Apple opening Siri to rival AIs and Shopify putting commerce inside AI chats are two faces of the same trend. AI is becoming the front-end of the internet, and the gatekeeper roles that once belonged to app stores, browsers, and search engines are migrating to AI chatbots.
For Amazon, this is a threat. If ChatGPT becomes the gateway where people discover products, Amazon's core value proposition as the shopping search engine erodes.
Zero commission is not charity. It is the most reliable way to create platform lock-in. Once Shopify becomes the infrastructure for AI commerce, monetization options multiply.
