OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Pro at $100/Month — Is This the Real Answer to Claude Code?

OpenAI launched ChatGPT Pro at $100/month with expanded Codex access. With Claude Code crossing $2.5B ARR, this is OpenAI's counter-offensive in the AI coding tool war.

$100 a month. That's the price tag OpenAI just put on catching Claude Code.

OpenAI officially launched ChatGPT Pro, a $100/month subscription tier that dramatically expands access to Codex, its coding-focused AI. The timing says everything: it dropped during the same week HumanX attendees were declaring "Claude Mania."

The AI coding tool landscape in April 2026

The market is a three-way race right now.

Anthropic's Claude Code is the terminal-based coding agent that automates everything from writing code to running tests to committing to git. Launched publicly in May 2025, it crossed $2.5 billion ARR by February 2026.

Cursor is the VS Code fork with deeply integrated AI, offering an "AI conversation inside your code editor" experience.

OpenAI's Codex/ChatGPT has the largest user base but has lagged in the dedicated coding experience. The Pro tier is the catch-up attempt.

Service Approach Monthly Cost Key Strength
Claude Code Terminal agent Usage-based Autonomous execution, git integration
Cursor AI-integrated IDE $20 In-editor AI conversation
ChatGPT Pro + Codex Conversational coding $100 Versatility, user base
GitHub Copilot Code completion $10-19 IDE integration, accessibility

What the Pro tier actually includes

Based on TechCrunch reporting, three things matter about the new tier.

First, Codex usage limits are substantially relaxed. Plus users hit hourly caps quickly. Pro users get what's described as "effectively unlimited" access.

Second, GPT-5.3 Instant Mini ships as the default model. It's a new model optimized for natural conversation, stronger contextual awareness, and improved coding performance.

Third, multimodal coding gets a boost. Show it a screenshot and say "build this UI," and it produces working code.

Why the timing matters

The timing makes the strategy transparent. OpenAI launched this during the week HumanX confirmed that Claude had captured the developer mindshare.

The competitive pressure is real. Claude Code's $2.5B ARR isn't just a revenue number. It represents a growing share of the developer tools market that OpenAI once dominated. Enterprise customers are choosing Anthropic's agentic platform, and the trend is accelerating.

The $100 price point targets Claude Code heavy users who spend $100+ monthly on usage-based billing. The pitch is straightforward: unlimited access for a predictable cost.

The bigger picture: pricing models collide

This launch crystallizes the AI coding tool market into three tiers: free (Copilot Free, ChatGPT Free), mid-range at $10-20 (Copilot Pro, Plus, Cursor), and premium at $100+ (ChatGPT Pro, Claude Code power users).

What's worth noting is that this market is still early. If Gartner's prediction holds and 40% of enterprise apps feature AI agents by year-end, the coding AI market could be multiples of its current size. OpenAI's $100 tier is a bet on that future.

The GPT-5.5 (codename Spud) release looms as well. Polymarket gives 78% odds it ships by the end of April. If Spud leapfrogs Claude on coding benchmarks, the Pro tier's value proposition could change overnight.

What this means for you

For developers, competition is always good news. More players means better tools and lower prices.

Practically, the $100/month tier makes sense for two groups: full-time developers who spend all day coding with AI, and Claude Code heavy users whose usage-based bills exceed $100 monthly. For everyone else, Plus at $20 or Cursor at $20 remains the better deal.

The bigger question is subscription versus usage-based billing. Think Netflix versus AWS. Predictable costs favor ChatGPT Pro. Pay-for-what-you-use favors Claude Code. Which model wins is an open question, but the competition itself benefits developers.
